Insight Tech-Gear swung by our booth at NRA 2009 to prove again why they dominate the tactical lasers, lights, and thermal imaging market. They brought over their tactical flashlights that are aircraft-grade aluminum, programmable and feature a blinding strobe function (I think the technical term is “thug debilitating strobe…”), military-grade tactical pistol lights, and AR laser lights. I’m one of those “once you’ve seen a red dot site, you’ve seen them all”. Not any more – Insight just released one that is waterproof up to 66ft. But my favorite is by far the Mini Thermal monocular. Here is a quick video of a comparison between 2 PVS 7B Gen 3 night vision Goggles. First is the SightOwl PVS 7B with a claimed “old stock” ITT 64 lp/mm tube. The second is an Excalibur PVS 7B “Choice” model, with a 57 lp/mm tube (this company no longer exists). Both units are used. Both videos were shot on different nights on the same locations, the lighting conditions were similar. For the Sighowl test the moon was full but there was some cloud cover, there were plenty of stars visible. For the Excalibur, there were no stars visible, and about a half to 3/4 moon, but there was a thin cloud cover (thinner then in the Sightowl test). Both days there was fresh snow on the ground, and the black spot in the middle of the screen is from the camcorder.
